As the sun slowly came out of it’s hibernation and the temperatures gradually climbed in Seoul; myself and three co-workers ……………. Samcheondong is an area in the Northern part of Seoul. The area is a Seoul-favorite for various reasons. Today, it is full of beautiful people, artisans, shops, cafes, galleries, and picturesque arrangements. It is also one of the most historical areas of Seoul. It is situated behind Gyeongbokgung; one of the greatest palaces from the Joseon Dynasty. It is also close to the President’s house. It is one of the few areas in Seoul where locals and tourists can see traditional Korean houses.

The area’s name is a product of “Samcheong-jeon” which is the Korean name for the three persons of the godhead Taoism. (another irony of Seoul, since the country was founded on Confucian and Buddhist ideas) Apparently all of the surrounding “dongs” or “areas” have bizarre names as well which are all associated with some type of government office or leader.
Whether I was intoxicated with sunshine, high on fresh air, or kicked on good company I enjoyed a wonderful day in Samcheondong. I almost felt as if I were no longer in Seoul (if it weren’t for the thousands of Koreans walking in front of, behind, and next to me) Since the area isn’t full of high rises, concrete, or busy people it gave a much more tranquil feel

I enjoyed strolling through the streets, haggling with artisans and shopkeepers, and numerous glasses of wine at quaint cafes. The Seoul locals seem to slow down a bit in this area and just enjoy the day. It almost had a European feel. The three of us managed to spend an entire day meandering and sitting. In our walk back towards the subway, we stumbled upon a walkway of cherry blossoms and Korean police. This is the area we assume was the president’s residence. We also walked along the walls of Gyeongbokgung. It was a beautiful day and a great way to “escape” the hustle and bustle of Seoul.

I’m still amazed at the size and diversity of Seoul as a city. Each “dong” seems to have a personality all of it’s own. The area in which I work/live is full of local’s with money and busy lives. The area near the military base/Itaewon is full of Western chains and foreigners, Hongdae is full of young artsy Koreans, and now Samcheondong almost feels like a quaint European village. As I’ve got another 6 months here, I need to continue my explorations and see what I can find!
